Chkalov Stairs in Nizhny Novgorod
This, the highest staircase on the Volga shores, was erected during the 1940's to commemorate the conclusion of the battle of Stalingrad in 1943. It was named after Valery Chkalov, the first man to fly non-stop from Moscow via the North Pole to Vancouver. At the foot of the staircase the boat Hero, used during the Patriotic War on the Volga, is exalted on a pedestal.
